Desk Mats

Choose the right desk mat for your setup

A good desk mat makes your workspace more comfortable, protects the surface and can improve how your mouse and keyboard behave. Decide the main job first. If you write a lot, choose a firm surface that feels stable under the pen or pick a desk pad with tear‑off sheets to keep notes neat. For smooth mouse movement and typing comfort, look at fabric or polyester‑foam mats. If desktop protection comes first, PVC or PP gives a wipe‑clean layer, and a transparent finish keeps the desk visible. Match the mat to your desk width and working zone, from compact formats for small layouts through to full‑width options for keyboard and mouse, and extra‑large lengths for wide setups. Matt or coloured surfaces cut glare and help optical mice, while clear PVC shows the grain of the desk beneath.

Materials at a glance

Material	What it’s like	Best use and care
PVC (incl. transparent)	Smooth to matt, wipe‑clean top with a non‑slip backing	Great for easy cleaning and desk protection, keeps the desk look when clear. Wipe with a damp cloth, keep away from high heat to avoid warping.
PP (polypropylene)	Lightweight with a slightly firmer feel than PVC	Good general protection with low weight. Wipe clean and store flat.
Polyester + foam / Fabric + rubber	Soft, grippy base with a textile surface tuned for mouse tracking	Ideal for typing comfort and precise mouse control, including gaming‑style extra‑large mats. Spot‑clean with mild soap and air‑dry flat.
Faux leather / Leather	Firm, premium writing surface with a refined look	Suits executive desks and tidy writing areas, works well as a smart desk protector. Wipe with a soft cloth, use leather care where appropriate.
Paper (tear‑off)	Writable blotter with multiple sheets	Handy for notes and daily plans while protecting the desk. Replace sheets as needed and recycle where possible.

Size, thickness and format checklist

Run through these quick checks to get the right fit and feel for your desk mat or desk pad.

Measure your working zone, then pick from typical formats such as 40 x 80 cm, 50 x 38 cm, 53 x 40 cm, 63 x 50 cm or 100 x 40 cm so there is room for your keyboard, mouse and a notepad.
Choose thickness to set the feel. Around 0.1–0.5 cm is common here. Thinner mats sit neatly under peripherals, thicker builds add cushioning.
Match rigidity to how you store it. Rollable PVC and textile mats are easy to put away. Rigid sheets stay ultra‑flat for writing.
Pick a surface texture that suits the task. Matt or lightly textured helps reduce glare and steady mouse tracking. Smooth or gloss wipes clean fastest.
Set the look. Go clear or transparent to show the desk, or choose black, grey, blue, green, yellow or multicolour to define work zones.
Check the edges. Anti‑curl treatments or stitched edges on textile mats help them keep their shape.

Sustainability and care

If you want a lower‑impact choice, look for FSC‑certified paper desk pads and products with recycled content where listed. Keep PVC and PP in good shape by wiping with a damp microfibre cloth and avoiding solvents. Fabric and polyester‑foam mats respond well to occasional spot cleaning and being air‑dried flat. Store rollable styles loosely rolled or flat to limit curling, and keep all mats away from direct heat or long periods of sunlight. A robust desk protector in PVC, PP or faux leather can prevent scuffs and stains on delicate surfaces and help your desktop last longer across daily use at Viking and beyond.

Did you know?

Viking brand Desk Mats come in PVC transparent and black polypropylene options at 63 x 50 cm, so buyers can choose between a wipe-clean see-through surface that keeps notes visible or a tougher, scuff-resistant PP finish that hides marks. They are a practical pick for everyday desks, offering reliable protection for worktops while keeping mouse tracking and writing smooth.

Questions & Answers

What size desk mat should I choose for my keyboard and mouse?

As a rule of thumb, 80 x 40 cm gives you space for a full-size keyboard plus wide mouse movement, and fits most standard desks. If you use a compact keyboard or work on a smaller surface, 50 x 38 cm or around 53 x 40 cm keeps things tidy without wasting space. For gaming or dual‑use work setups, larger formats like 100 x 40 cm give more consistent glide and room for low mouse sensitivity. Measure the depth of your desk and leave a few centimetres clear at the front edge so your wrists rest comfortably on the desk pad.

Is a fabric desk mat better than PVC for mouse accuracy?

Fabric-textile tops (often polyester with a rubber or foam base) give a consistent, slightly textured glide that most optical mice track very well on, and they feel softer under the wrist. PVC and other smooth plastics feel firmer and faster, which some users prefer for quick flicks, but they can show more micro‑scratches over time. If pointer precision is your priority for everyday work or gaming, a good fabric surface is the safer choice, while PVC suits those who like a slicker feel and easy‑wipe desk protector performance.

How do I flatten a rollable desk pad that arrived curled?

Unroll it, lay it flat with the curl facing down, and weigh the corners for 24–48 hours. Gentle warmth helps, so place it in a warm room or use low heat from a hairdryer briefly, keeping it moving and not too close.

How should I clean a leather desk mat compared with a plastic one?

For a leather desk mat (including faux leather), wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth, then dry, and use a mild leather cleaner or conditioner occasionally to prevent drying or cracking. Avoid harsh chemicals and too much water. For PVC or PP plastic, use a damp cloth with a little mild soap, then rinse and dry, and you can tackle ink or scuffs with a plastic‑safe cleaner. In both cases, skip abrasive pads to protect the surface of your desk protector.
