Monitor Buying Guide

How to choose your monitor?

A great monitor can transform your computer experience. Whether you’re working, gaming, creating, or streaming, the right display makes everything look and feel better. With so many options, choosing the perfect monitor can be tricky. This guide explains what matters most, clarifies key terms, and helps you find the best screen for your needs and budget.

Monitor Size

The size of your monitor really matters—it depends on what you’ll use it for. Monitor sizes are measured in inches from one corner to the opposite corner (diagonally).

For most home or office use, screens between 19” and 25” work well. If you work with video or graphic design, go for 27” or bigger for a larger and clearer display. Gamers should choose the biggest screen they can, as it gives better side vision and a more immersive experience, especially in first-person games.

Aspect ratios

Aspect ratio is the shape of your screen, shown as width to height (like 16:9). It affects how much you can see on the screen — wider ratios are great for movies, multitasking, and gaming.

Panel type

TN

TN - lower cost, fast response times; weaker colour and viewing angles.

IPS

IPS - better colours, good viewing angles; slightly more expensive.

VA

VA - somewhere between TN & IPS in performance/price.

OLED

OLED - excellent contrast, colours, but higher cost and less common in monitors.

Refresh rate & response time

Refresh Rate

How many times per second the screen updates (Hz). Higher refresh = smoother motion. Especially useful for gaming.

Response time

How fast a pixel changes colour (milliseconds). Lower = less blur/ghosting. Important in fast-motion content/gaming.

Curved screens:

Beneficial especially for ultrawide formats as they reduce distortion and offer immersive feel. Curved screens create a more immersive viewing experience and help reduce eye strain by keeping the screen’s edges within your natural field of vision.
