Printers Buying Guide
Comparing different types of printer
Confused by the huge selection of printers available, and want to make sure you get the right product for your money? Check out the Viking printer buying guide and find the information you need to decrypt specifications and uncover the perfect product for your needs.
What are the differences between laser and inkjet printers?
Inkjet printers produce images by injecting dots of ink onto the paper, whereas laser printers use static electricity and laser beams to transfer powder from toner cartridges. Lasers tend to be more expensive upfront, but are cheaper to run.
Because the laser process is much quicker, and therefore suited to high-volume printing, these machines are favoured in offices. They are generally too bulky and expensive for the home, and don’t boast the same level of versatility as an inkjet.
While lasers are great for bulk printing documents, inkjets reign supreme when it comes to colour printing. So, if you’re looking to print out kids’ school projects or photographs, an inkjet printer is the better option.
What is an all-in-one printer?
All-in-one printers do more than print: they boast extra features that make working with your documents easier. Here at Viking, you’ll find printers that can also copy and scan; or copy, scan and fax.
Copy functionality allows you to quickly and easily create copies of existing print outs, leaflets, images, documents and more—usually up to A4 in size. You can often create multiple copies at the touch of a button, without the need to have your computer switched on.
Printers with an integrated scanner can take these same documents and translate them into a digital copy to be viewed on your screen. This enables you to share them via email, make changes and reprint, or create backups.
A fax feature allows you to save space and possibly money on buying a dedicated fax machine. Plus, you can enjoy the convenience of printing and faxing in one place.
What is a wireless printer?
Wireless printers connect to your Wi-Fi, meaning that they can be used by any compatible device on your network—without the need for cables. This gives you the freedom to place yours anywhere in the home (as long as it is close enough to a power outlet).
Many are compatible with wireless cameras and mobile phone/tablet apps too, so that you can send jobs to your printer whenever you’re connected. You could access the web through your camera while on holiday and print out your snaps ready to view when you return home.
